Denver police deal with angry protesters over ICE in a chaotic downtown exchange and stop a group from getting to I-25

On Tuesday night, Denver police responded in full force to marches downtown following an early evening protest at the Colorado State Capitol. Video footage from the scene, near the intersection of 20th Street and Little Raven Street, showed a large group of demonstrators and visible smoke just before 10 p.m.

In one moment, a marcher threw an object that appeared to be a pepper ball back at the police.

At least one person was detained during the protests, and police blocked the entrance to Interstate 25 at Broadway to prevent marchers from entering. There was also a strong police presence at Market Street and 20th.

The protest, initially a peaceful demonstration against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), became more chaotic as the night continued. Denver police confirmed to CBS Colorado that rocks and bottles were thrown at officers near Coors Field.

Although video footage circulating online showed smoke, the police did not clarify what caused it. CBS Colorado reached out for more details, but the final report was not yet available. The police did confirm, however, that tear gas was not used during the event.

Similar confrontations have been occurring in multiple cities across the U.S., including Los Angeles, where protests have been ongoing for days. Many of these protests, including those in Texas, Chicago, and now Denver, have been sparked by events in California.
