Starting Monday, drivers in the Denver metro area may notice some changes to their usual routes as the City of Littleton begins a major stormwater repair project.
For the next 10 weeks, Federal Boulevard just south of Belleview Avenue will be fully closed while crews work to replace aging infrastructure beneath the roadway.
Upgrading Littleton’s Stormwater System
This repair project is part of a larger effort by the City of Littleton to modernize its stormwater system. A recent citywide survey found that many parts of the stormwater system are nearing the end of their lifespan, with some components dating back to the 1970s.
To address this issue, the city has prioritized repairs and upgrades to ensure the system can effectively manage stormwater for years to come.
David Gilbert, a representative from the City of Littleton, emphasized the importance of these repairs. “This work is necessary to make sure we can remove stormwater and get it to where it needs to go,” Gilbert said.
“We’re replacing the old metal pipe with something far more durable, and we’re doing it as quickly as possible.”
Details of the Repair Work
The project involves removing 182 feet of deteriorating corrugated metal pipe and replacing it with 36-inch reinforced concrete pipe.
In addition to the pipe replacement, crews will replace one concrete junction box, modify two others, and install more than 250 feet of cured-in-place pipe lining. These upgrades are expected to improve the stormwater system’s longevity and reliability.
Traffic Impact and Detours
To complete the work, full excavation of the roadway is required, which means Federal Boulevard will be completely closed south of Belleview Avenue. While this closure may cause some inconvenience, the city does not anticipate major traffic disruptions, as this section of the road is not one of Littleton’s highest-traffic areas.
Detour routes will be clearly marked to guide drivers around the closure. Local access to nearby businesses, including Partner Colorado Credit Union and Foushee SalonSpa, will be maintained.
Timeline and Expectations
The construction is set to begin on June 23, 2025, and is expected to be completed by late summer, depending on weather and work conditions. City officials are asking for the public’s patience during this necessary repair process.
“We know it’s a hassle,” Gilbert acknowledged. “But we appreciate everyone’s patience. These repairs are key to keeping Littleton’s infrastructure safe and strong for the future.”
