If you drive around Sweetwater, you’ve probably noticed potholes that make the roads rough and sometimes dangerous. Many people in the community have shared their thoughts about the condition of city streets and the need for better repairs.
Residents Speak Out About Road Problems
Sweetwater resident Ron Johnston said, “The city roads are kind of in rough shape. Some interstate exits, like exit 242 near Hopkins Road, are really bad. They worked on the underpass and feeder roads, but didn’t finish. There are some potholes in town that are just crazy. They have been working on gas lines and tore up the roads, but they don’t patch them very well.”
Several things cause roads to get rough. In Texas, extreme heat during summer, heavy rain and flooding in the rainy season, and the freeze-thaw cycle all damage the streets. Water seeps into cracks and expands, which leads to potholes.
Fixing Potholes: Short-Term vs Long-Term Solutions
Ken Becker, another resident, pointed out that “patching potholes is only a short-term fix. We need long-term repairs.” He added that people often complain about potholes but also get upset when roads are closed for full repairs.
Becker said the city is going through new leadership with a new mayor and city manager, and hopes they will prioritize fixing the roads properly.
Ron Johnston also mentioned, “Sometimes when they patch potholes, the asphalt is left too high or too low, so the road still feels rough. Many roads need a full overlay, but that costs a lot.”
Funding Challenges and What’s Next
One major problem is funding. Residents don’t want higher taxes, which makes it harder for the city to pay for major road repairs.
Ken Becker said, “It can’t all be fixed at once. The city needs to focus on the busiest roads first to help businesses and industries.”
Tips for Drivers: Stay Safe and Report Potholes
If you see a pothole while driving, slow down and steer around it if possible to avoid damaging your vehicle. You should also report potholes to the city to help get them fixed.
If your car does get damaged, take photos and document the pothole to support any claims.
Please drive carefully and stay alert on Sweetwater roads.
