For 30 years, The Urban Farm in Denver has been a place where kids, families, and adults can learn what it’s like to work on a real farm.
From horses and sheep to donkeys and chickens, the farm gives people hands-on experiences while teaching about animals, agriculture, and caring for nature. But now, this cherished community farm is facing financial challenges, especially in the off-season.
What Is The Urban Farm?
Located near I-70 and Havana Street, The Urban Farm spans 23 acres of land owned by Denver Parks and Recreation. The farm welcomes about 25,000 visitors every year, with most visits happening during the busy summer months.
That’s when summer camps are full and the farm is lively with kids learning about animals, gardening, and more.
Funding and Financial Struggles
According to executive director Paige Heydon, the farm gets about 65% of its funding from the City of Denver. The rest comes from ticket sales, donations, and fundraising. While summer brings in steady income, things slow down in the fall and winter, which makes it harder to cover day-to-day expenses.
Heydon says the farm is not alone—many nonprofits are struggling in today’s economy. With less government and private funding available, the farm’s future is uncertain. The biggest worry is taking care of the animals, especially the horses.
Caring for Horses Is Costly
There are currently 20 horses at the farm. Thirteen of them are rescues, and six are nearing retirement. Older horses need special care, and Heydon says it costs around $7,400 per year to care for just one of them. That includes food, medical care, and daily maintenance.
Kate Barber, the farm’s equine program manager, joined in 2024 after earning a degree in Equine Science from CSU. She left her job at a saddle company in Kentucky to work with children and horses—something she finds incredibly fulfilling.
Health Concerns and Special Needs
Older rescue horses often come with health problems, like a dental disease called EOTRH, which requires ongoing dental care. Medications and special treatments for these horses are a regular part of the farm’s expenses, making budgeting even harder.
Barber and Heydon both say they love what they do, but they’re always thinking about how to cover the costs while keeping the animals healthy and happy.
Community Support and Farm Life
Even with financial worries, the farm remains a place of learning and joy. During CBS Colorado’s recent visit, about 200 summer campers were there enjoying activities like gardening and animal care. Programs like these are why The Urban Farm continues to be a special part of Denver’s community.
The Urban Farm offers more than just a day out with animals—it’s a place where people connect with nature, learn responsibility, and build memories. But it depends heavily on community support and funding.
As economic challenges grow, so does the need for help to keep this meaningful space running and ensure that the animals—especially the rescue horses—get the care they deserve.
